M-F4 closes the window, and it's not actually part of firefox under linux it's part of your windowmanager. Firefox added C-Q which closes all of your windows, and it's unhelpfully right next to C-W, so I actidently hit it on occassion.

The window manager sends a 'hint' to the program upon the Alt+F4, no? Is that how that works?

Todays lesson will be from the book of ICCCM, chapter 4, verse 2.8.1.

If the program advertises that it supports clean window destruction by adding the WM_DELETE_WINDOW atom to WM_PROTOCOLS list on it's top level windows; then the window manager sends a CleintMessage to the top level window with data[0] = WM_DELETE_WINDOW. If the program does not set WM_DELETE_WINDOW, the window manager is free to unceremoniously quit the program that created the window using XKillClient().
